FAQs

Surface Studio Digital Assets (SSDA) are high-resolution digital images of real, handmade surfaces created by Surface Studio NYC — the original surface prop rental studio founded in 1996.

Each surface is crafted from authentic materials, professionally photographed in a commercial studio, and optimized for use in still life, product, and editorial photography workflows. SSDA surfaces give creative teams immediate access to realistic, studio-quality backgrounds without the need for physical builds or location shoots.

SSDA is built for professional creative teams and commercial workflows, including:

  • Creative Directors and Producers
  • Digital Asset Managers (DAMs)
  • Retouchers and Graphic Designers
  • Photographers and Stylists
  • E-commerce and DTC brands
  • Advertising agencies and publishers
  • Architects and visualization teams

Whether you work in product photography, food photography, editorial, or brand marketing, SSDA surfaces help you create polished imagery faster and more consistently.

Unlike generic stock textures or AI-generated imagery, SSDA surfaces are made from real, physical materials and captured in a professional photography studio using controlled commercial lighting.

Our images are minimally retouched, free of destructive sharpening, and designed to look natural in real-world compositions. Because they originate from tangible materials — not algorithms — SSDA surfaces deliver consistent, realistic results that hold up across multiple projects, brands, and campaigns.

Creative teams use SSDA to reduce production costs, save time, and avoid the inconsistencies often found in synthetic or AI textures.

Yes — SSDA images are licensed for commercial use. However, the client must hold the license for any image used in their project.

Licenses are royalty-free and may be used multiple times by the licensed client. If you wish to use the same image for a different client, an additional license must be purchased for that client. Once licensed, the client may reuse the image for future projects without repurchasing.

User and sharing limits:

  • Up to ten (10) individuals from the same legal entity may access and use a licensed image.
  • Images may be shared internally with employees, clients, and subcontractors for review.
  • The original high-resolution file may not be transferred outside your legal entity except to subcontractors working directly on the project.
  • If you require access for more than ten users, please contact Surface Studio to purchase extended rights.

No. SSDA images are photographs of real, physical surfaces — including their natural edges, texture variations, and depth. They are not repeating tiles, patterns, or digital illustrations, which makes them more realistic for professional compositing and retouching.

No — you are not required to credit Surface Studio Digital Assets when using our images in client or commercial work.

That said, we love seeing how our surfaces are used. If you’d like to share your work, tag us on social media or email us — we may feature your project.
